Battle For the Ice: The Great NHL War

Battle #5: Ben Smith vs Jimmy Howard

A man dressed in a red and black colored suit like Captain America’s flung his shield at another man. His outfit was water and fire retardant (which offered a medium level of resistance to electric shocks and force impacts and the suit couldn’t be pieced by normal conventional sharp edged materials like sharp wood, glass, iron, copper and aluminum); the suit also gave him some resistance to high temperatures.

This second guy was dressed in a stretchy black outfit like the villain Venom. On his chest, he had a massive Red Wing symbol etched into the weird costume. The shield missed him, as he did an acrobatic backflip out of the way.

“This is your last chance, stand down or be destroyed. I don’t like bullies, no matter where they come from!” the first guy dressed like Captain America snarled.

“Oh, aren’t you just a breath of fresh air, Benjamin Smith!” came the response.

Ben Smith raised his hand up, catching his shield as it came back to him. “More than you’ll be Howard!” Ben snapped back, walking forward, getting ready to throw his shield out again.

Jimmy Howard smirked and threw his hand out, shooting his web at Ben. The Blackhawk attempted to raise his shield up but he wasn’t quick enough. Also, the webbing wrapped around his legs, yanking him to the ground. He crashed to the grass of his dramatic arena: the Garfield Park, just west of the United Center.

Jimmy shot more of the web at him, making it so that his arms were immobilized. Ben wriggled on the ground, trying to get free, to get to his shield but Jimmy bent down and snatched the object up. “It’s certainly not metal that’s for sure…” the villain spoke to himself, smirking.

“Of course not!” Ben snapped.

He focused all of his energy into his arms and legs and burst through the webbing, jumping to his feet. He had surprised the villain, as he snatched his shield back and then kicked his legs out from under him. The hero then proceeded to physically beat the hell out of the villain. But his anger clouded him and he was flung backward. He slammed into a tree, face first and hit his head on a tree branch.

Ben was kneeling on the ground, dazed from the collision. He had one hand covering the long gash on his other arm. His mask was half-torn, but there was that unmistakable look of passion in his eyes, reserved for his bravery and confidence. “You can’t win!”

“Really?” Jimmy just looked at the wounded man, not attempting to help. He didn't feel the need. Why should he? He was a villain.

“Who can help you out against me?” Jimmy replied savagely. “I'll break your bones.” He paced on the cracked floor.

'What happened to you, Howard?'

What was this? Was he trying his hand at digging up remorse? Regret? Was there any in the villain?

No.

“Jimmy Howard’s dead, Benjamin,” came Jimmy's retort. “He was weak as a good guy, no being despicable is much better.”

“What happened to make you like this… what happened—“ the brave hero started, but was cut short.

“Don't you dare!” Jimmy had stopped his pacing and placed his hand around Ben's throat. Through his black, puffy eyes, he watched the villain with horror as the man continued to snarl at him, "Don't you dare try to sweet talk me into being good! Whatever humanity I had died the day you became a hero! When you—“

“It was the only way to save my team from losing, you would’ve done the same in my shoes!” gasped Ben through Jimmy's chokehold. “The needs of the many—“

“I don’t care. You illegally hit me and knocked me out of the playoffs, hurting my precious Red Wings.”

There was a terrible roar of agony. A scream of pain, a snap, and then…
Silence.

Ben Smith’s broken body crumpled to the floor. There and then, his eyes still had the passionate blaze of hope – and it vanished.

Jimmy let him fall to the ground and as soon as he did, Ben’s eyes snapped open and he swung his foot around and knocked the legs out from under the villain. Then he jumped up and pinned the villain down to the ground.

“What the--!?”

“Yeah, I faked that, you should know that it will take more than a simple attempt to snap my neck, in order to kill me!” He leapt backward, grabbing his shield up in the process.

Underneath his own worn-out mask with little wings painted on the cowled helmet, Jimmy smiled. This man would only experience a tiny part of the horror he had within himself, and that was enough.

“What are you gonna do, Jimmy?” Ben looked straight at the villain.

“Something I'm gonna do to you…and the whole city of Chicago!” and with that Jimmy leapt onto him, his hand raised up, clenched in a fist.

Instinctively, Ben raised his shield, protecting him for the rain of fisted blows. He pushed forward, but Jimmy had predicted this, tucking himself into a ball and somersaulting over him, down his back and spine. Landing right behind Ben, he aimed a kick at his back. Again, Ben ducked, swiping his shield at the villain's legs.

Jimmy would have been grounded if not for the spider-like-sense he had often relied on. With his agility he hopped and planted a kick on his opponent's skull.

Ben slid on the grassy ground from the impact of the kick. “It doesn't have to end like this, Jimmy. Give up and fight the symbiote you have…and we'll—“

“We'll what, Benjamin?” Jimmy shot back, arming his web-shooting hands at the hero once more. “There's no going back… after I take you out, Chicago and all your little hockey heroes are going to be the villains’!”

“LISTEN TO YOURSELF!” Ben snapped back.

The hero felt a crisp, strong breeze blow at him. It ruffled the short strands of his golden brown hair on his head and sent chills up his spine under his tattered uniform. Behind the villain, he spotted a storm cloud hovering in the distance. That had to be the work of Torey Krug!

Hopefully he was having more luck in his fight then Ben was.

“Benny Boy, Benjamin” Jimmy cut across. 'I've had enough of your shit.' Summoning the powers of the symbiote, Jimmy threw out his arm and extended a bladed tendril which reached across the field toward the weary, yet hopeful, hero.

Ben threw up his shield in hopes of avoiding the lethal attack as thunder struck overhead. Multiple times. There were flashes of light. Ben tried to ignore the lightning and thunder and the storm that raged overhead. The legendary shield flew, forced from the hero’s hold and rested on the ground. Ben too fell to the ground. His head rolled to the side and his eyes flew wide open with shock.

Then, before he could move or do anything, he felt himself get slammed into a tree again and was immediately web-tied to the trunk.

“Really?” Jimmy laughed. He was staring at the fallen hero, who was struggling in the web rope once more. However this time, he wasn’t as strong. “Hero no more. Eh?”

“Wrong!” Ben growled as he spotted a welcome sight coming up behind the wicked man, who was snickering, unaware of the threat.

A little unintentional gift from Torey Krug, who had to be fighting nearby. The Boston Bruin defenseman had spawned lightning and because of the close proximity to where he was fighting and where Ben and Jimmy were, out of luck a bolt came down and hit Jimmy, zapping him. It gave Ben some more strength and hope and he wriggled out of the webbing a third time.

But this time, he didn’t hold back, he jumped on top of Jimmy and pounded him with his fists. Lefts and rights. Blow after blow. And then he grabbed his battered shield and just brought it down over the back of the villain’s bloody head.

“Not bad for a shield fighter, huh, Jimmy?” Ben snapped, before clocking him over the head once more with the shield. Then he slumped on the ground, exhausted. Rain began to pelt him. He’d have to thank his atmokinetic Bruin friend...and also give him a piece of his mind. His hair plastered to his face, he ripped his mask off completely and threw it on the ground. What good would it do to keep it on? It was useless to him.

He got up and staggered off, thinking Jimmy to be dead. He wandered onto Madison and looked for Torey Krug.

Meanwhile, Jimmy groaned and pushed himself up. He was bleeding pretty badly and his muscles screamed at him from the pain and agony he felt. He let himself drop down and roll over onto his back.

Suddenly, he spotted three figures standing over him. One was the wicked leader, Sean Avery and the other two were: John Scott and Matt Cooke.

“You got beat too, huh?” John growled.

“Enough talking. We need to start rounding all the villains up, we’re wasting time battling these ridiculous heroes one-on-one. We need to group together and work as a team. We’ve got to take them out together!” Sean Avery spat, stomping his foot on the muddy ground, splashing Jimmy with the rain-soaked dirt.

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah, besides men, I wanna get my hands on that super spy of theirs and that little blondie...something’s definitely up with those two...there’s a secret with them and I’d like to know!” He glanced at the stormy skies. “It’s time to go after Tyler and Patrick, boys.”
