The Cabin by the Lake

Summary

We sat around the small office of the lawyer. He was sorting through piles of paperwork on his desk. My mother, Aunt Janet, Uncle Paul, Uncle Kyle, and all the cousins waited impatiently. Everyone was sniffling and trying to hold back their tears. But I sat still, I wasn’t crying. I knew my grandmother more than anyone else in this room. I spend all my breaks from college with her. When my parents got divorced my grandmother was there for me…she was the stability in my life. “Here it is!” He opened the letter and smiled. “I knew there was one more item on the will.” My cousins hoped for her car, my mother and her siblings hoped for money. But so far it was little items and trinkets. She didn’t have a home and she gave her car to the church to use. “This last item is left to…Emily.” I stopped playing with the light blue polka dotted dress she had made me. “I told her not to leave me anything…” He smiled, “The letter reads, “For my Emily, I can’t be there for your graduation. But use this for your photography. Use this for your writing. Use this in the same way I did.”” He handed me an envelope and looked back down at the paper, “My dearest Emily gets my cabin on the lake.” Everyone was confused, but I knew what it was. I’ve only ever seen one picture she took a few years ago in the fall…it was a small white cabin, big enough for two people, right on a small lake. She had no neighbors, but the occasional guest. My family had never gone to it. It was a place she used with my grandfather a few times before he passed away, and she went to every summer for a few weeks. The envelope had a letter and a key, but I decided to read it later. “She had paid off any mortgage on it.” I nodded, my family insisted there was a mistake…but there wasn’t.

I would be finished. She needs to be too. Not to let someone in your life your girlfriend in on christmas but let your friends ex-girlfriend that you slept with in to celebrate christmas with you and your family. No thanks. He has to be still "seeing" her.
